Job Description

Job Title:  Geological Postdoctoral Fellow - Energy Frontier Research Center
Req Number:  23156
Division:  Earth Sciences
Department:  Hydrogeology

The DOE Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) for Nanoscale Control of Geologic CO2 is a collaborative effort led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). As part of the Center, this postdoctoral fellow will perform laboratory research on the basic physicochemical hydrodynamics of brine and condensed CO2 (both supercritical and liquid) in geologic media. The primary activities will be on laboratory investigations into fluid mechanical properties of brine films adsorbed on mineral surfaces and confined by condensed CO2. Related experiments will focus on brine-CO2 interfacial processes including interactions between wettability, interfacial tension, and capillary breakthrough (leakage) of CO2.

Key Responsibilities
• Conduct laboratory experiments to measure hydraulic properties of brine films confined between condensed CO2 and mineral surfaces, including viscosity, interfacial tension, and the potential-dependence of film thickness and film transmissivity.
• Conduct this work in a safe manner, in compliance with all health and safety regulations.
• Work with other researchers on this EFRC in order to facilitate progress toward Center goals.
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
• Maintain detailed, well-organized laboratory/experimental notebooks and data files.

Qualifications
• Background in physical/surface chemistry and flow/transport in porous media.
• Experience working independently or with limited supervision using chemical/hydrologic laboratory techniques at ambient and elevated pressure, spectroscopy, and microscopy.
• Ability to design, set up, and run novel experiments, with limited supervision.
• Ph.D., with extensive laboratory research experience in chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, environmental engineering, soil chemistry, soil physics, groundwater hydrology, or other related fields.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to write peer reviewed papers with limited supervision.

Notes
This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
